The Artemis Transat – Fujifilm yacht – day 14

Wednesday 28. May 2008 - Alex has been at sea for two weeks now and all things are going well. Speaking to him on his satellite phone earlier, he said: "I'm making the most of light winds at the moment. I'm holding my own in about 8 knots of wind and am sailing with the code sail. We're doing a good speed and and haven't really been at a disadvantage with the genoa."

Alex has had an amazing bit of luck with regards to the furler, the cylinder at the top of the mast that is used to help connect the sail. He added:” I really didn’t want to climb the mast to sort this, particularly in the rough weather, so last night, I set some of the rope free and then, during the night, the furler slid down. It meant that I could really shake the front of the forestay and the furler came down further and is now below deck. I still need to try and sort it out but it’s all about timing. While there is wind, I’m making the most of it with the sails that I have.”

Alex is very tired but is keeping on top of stuff. He’s making sure he’s eating and drinking enough and is still making sound tactical decisions and his sense of humour is still good – even when I told him Russia won the Eurovision Song Contest.

Fujifilm is currently in 5th position.
