UN sustainability goals as a compass for Epson

Monday 17. February 2020 - Henning Ohlsson, Managing Director of Epson Germany and CSR Director of Epson Europe: 2020 marks the beginning of a decisive decade. Companies that act sustainably will be the economically successful ones in the long term.

For Epson Deutschland GmbH, a decade is beginning which will be even more strongly marked by the topics of responsibility and sustainability than before. The consistent implementation of the internationally formulated and recognised sustainability goals of the United Nations forms the compass for all measures. Key milestones in the company’s environmental and social policy have already been formulated since 2008 in the long-term Epson Environmental Vision 2050 and fixed in the medium-term corporate vision “Epson 25”. In doing so, Epson is relying on its strengths, namely to further perfect the already energy-efficient, environmentally friendly technologies and thus to act in accordance with the responsibility of a globally active technology group.
“Companies are called upon to assume responsibility and do their utmost to operate sustainably and act socially. For Epson, this form of doing business has been an essential part of its corporate culture since its inception,” says Henning Ohlsson, Managing Director of Epson Deutschland GmbH and also CSR Director Epson Europe. “In my opinion, the wheat will separate from the chaff in this decade. A decisive decade begins with 2020. Companies that act sustainably will be the economically successful ones in the long term. This is all about the “win-win-win-win” conditions for our customers, the environment and us!”
The Epson technologies, the resulting products and the unique corporate culture result in a triad of sustainability and are the best prerequisite for success. Customers demand sustainability from companies and include this very specifically in their purchasing decisions. The environmental vision 2050 includes a multi-pronged programme with the goal of developing and using efficient, compact and precise technologies and achieving sustainability through a functioning recycling economy. This includes measures such as the reduction of the environmental impact of production processes, products and services or the establishment of recycling systems through open and unique innovations. It is not only a matter of being good, but of becoming even better. This has been driving Epson for years. The sustainability goals of the United Nations are the compass for the new decade.
Business Ink as an example of sustainable and successful management
As a pioneer of technology change in the office environment, Epson has invested over half a billion euros in the development, production and sale of efficient business inkjet printers. In summary, this technology offers unbeatable advantages such as less waste, significant savings in energy costs and CO2 emissions. Epson continues to gain market share in the office printing sector thanks to the switch from laser to sustainable ink printing. According to the market research company IDC, the company’s value-based market share in Western Europe rose to around 40 percent between 2015 and 20191. This positive trend for Epson Business Inkjet also continues for Epson Deutschland GmbH, with a value-based market share for Germany, Austria and Switzerland of 49 percent1 in the same period.
