Celebrated Author, Educator Frank Romano Returns to Cal Poly in Winter 2017 as Research Professor from Industry
Tuesday 07. February 2017 - Professor Frank Romano, a celebrated graphic communication author, researcher and educator, will return to Cal Poly in winter quarter 2017 as part of the Research Professors from Industry program for the fourth time in eight years. Romano, professor emeritus from the Rochester Institute of Technology, will teach a course on book production and publishing in the Graphic Communication Department.
Over the 10-week quarter, a team of 16 students will design a book using Adobe InDesign, managing color files to print consistently using two different printing processes.
“Having Frank Romano here to engage with our students is an absolutely extraordinary event,” said Ken Macro, chair of Cal Polys Graphic Communication Department. Students in graphic communication gain tremendous opportunities not just in learning from his mastery of subject matter but also having exposure to the vast network of professionals with whom he communicates. It is an honor to have him here, and we look forward to it every couple of years.”
In the spirit of Cal Polys Learn by Doing philosophy, students in Romanos course will assist in book design, layout, photo-prep and placement, and impositioning of a book entitled “Mike Brunos History of Printing in the 20th Century.” The book highlights the life and contributions of Michael Bruno, renowned scientist, scholar and editor of “Pocket Pal Graphic Arts Production Handbook.”
Professor Romano has extensively studied Brunos research and notes and has collected photographs and interesting personal materials from Brunos collection, which is now housed at The Museum of Printing in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
“This book is about the person who had a profound effect on the development of printing technology,” Romano said. “It will be a time capsule for a bygone era.”
The book will be printed by Quad Graphics.
