Further growth planned – third press under discussion
The UK magazine printing market is fiercely competitive with publishers expecting high quality and consistently reproducible color coupled with minimal turnaround times and low prices.
To meet these exacting requirements and to assist the company’s future growth, the ability to increase capacities and boost operating efficiencies was therefore top of the list of requirements for award-winning UK based magazine printer Buxton Press when it was seeking to invest in new presses at Drupa 2012 as part of its £20 million four-year rolling investment program.
Following extensive testing, the newly launched Speedmaster XL 106 from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) was chosen from among five different manufacturers; Buxton Press, opting for two eight-color Speedmaster XL 106 long perfecting presses complete with CutStar reel sheeters. Both presses are also equipped with Prinect Inpress Control for color and register control on the fly and the Autoplate XL simultaneous plate changer, drastically reducing make ready times, boosting operating efficiencies and minimizing paper waste.
Six months after the installation of the first Speedmaster XL 106, the second press is now installed and hard at work.
“We are delighted both with the Heidelberg technology and the performance of the XL106 Speedmaster presses which, when combined with our existing four long perfecting presses, will completely revolutionise Buxton’s overall output capabilities.” says Managing Director Kirk Galloway, adding: “Buxton is at an incredibly exciting stage in its development and the increased output of the two Heidelberg XL106 presses will greatly assist. As we are winning new work on an almost daily basis, a further investment in press number three is already on the cards.”
