Domtar celebrates 10th anniversary of its head office urban garden

Tuesday 23. October 2012 - Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Domtar Garden at its corporate head office - a unique and restful oasis open to the public, adjacent to Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles.

“The forest and the wood fiber it contains are central to our business, so Domtar Garden is a fitting and very public expression of our corporate identity,” noted John D. Williams, President and CEO of Domtar. “It perfectly illustrates one of our key values, caring, because as a sustainable company we care for the environment, for our people, and our host communities.”
Domtar Garden was officially inaugurated on September 18, 2002 with the theme, A forest for everyone forever. The garden is a partial representation of the boreal forest ecosystem divided into two sections:
The north side symbolizes Canada’s eastern forests. A knoll is covered with a mass of indigenous vegetation (oak, sugar maple, hackberry, birch, jack pine, Canada serviceberry). At the edge of this forest, a rocky embankment descends to an expanse of wood reminiscent of a river. On a “beach” by the “riverbank” stands Echo, a wood sculpture of stylized bear cubs by Michel Saulnier, offering a reminder that the forest, too, has its inhabitants. Also in this section of the Garden is a playground that provides a safe, natural environment for the children who attend the Origami daycare at Domtar House.
The south side, with its formal, grid-like pattern of trees, offers a more urban take on the forest. The plantings here include some of the tree species that are important in Domtar’s operations, including oak, ash and poplar.
Over the past decade, Domtar Garden has received two awards: an Orange award from Save Montreal, in the Parks and Public Spaces category, in November 2002, and first prize in the commercial landscaping category (Le paysage du monde des affaires) for best commercial, public or institutional project over $20,000, awarded by the Quebec Association of Professional Landscapers.
