Publish Asia 2011 Brings Best Practices to Bangkok Meeting
Thursday 07. April 2011 - With more than 35 speakers from more than 15 countries and hundreds of publishers, chief editors and other newspaper executives attending, the annual Publish Asia conference is packed with case studies and expert presentations on innovations and new concepts being pioneered by media houses around the world.
The annual event, to be held from 27 to 29 April next in Bangkok, Thailand, is the premier Asian publishing conference organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) for publishing houses in the region.
Some of the highlights of the conference, which takes the theme, “Driving Future Proof Media Growth,” include:
– Joong Ang Ilbo is one of the leading newspapers from Korea. Jeongdo Hong, Chief Strategy officer will talk about its change in format, launch of a new television channel and the integrated newsroom that connects the different platforms.
– Times of India is the largest English newspaper in the world with a circulation of more than 3.5 million. Ravi Dhariwal, the CEO, will talk about their success strategies, the brand centric approach and innovations such as private treaties to monetize the advertising inventory.
– News Corp, the media company of Rupert Murdoch, has been in the forefront of taking calculated risks. Al Trivino, Director of Creative Projects, will present the the Daily, the new iPad only product and the thinking process behind the launch.
– Axel Springer, the media giant from Germany, now derives 25 percent of their topline revenue of approximately 2 billion Euro from digital operations. Gregor Waller, former VP for Strategy and Innovation, will share how they monetize the digital content.
– USA Today and Gannett has created several successful mobile applications based on the needs of their readers and generating revenues. Matt Jones, VP for Mobile Ad Strategy Operations, will describe their pioneering experiences.
– Archant Group, the innovative regional publisher from UK, is now taking on Groupon with its own product. Serge Taborin, Group Business Development Director, will present how they did it.
– Straits Times from Singapore won the World Young Reader Prize for 2010. Bertha Hansen, Associate Editor describes their initiatives to attract a young audience.
– Agora from Poland has developed several new products with the joint efforts of editorial, sales, circulation and advertising teams, to not only increase online traffic but also increase print sales. Gregorz Piechota, Special Projects Editor, will present a case study on how they did it.
– Nation Multimedia Group from Thailand is a pioneer in using social media. Sutichai Yoon, Group Editor-in-Chief, shares their experiences on how the newsroom has embraced social media to connect to readers.
– Bangkok Post has embarked on an ambitious outsourcing programme that covers editorial, customer relations, marketing, advertising and financing. Pichai Chuensuksawadi, Editor in Chief, will talk about the learning lessons, what works and what are the areas to look out for.
– New York Daily News is an outlier when it comes to high quality printing. Christopher Baker, Vice President for manufacturing, will describe how their new print facility got the coveted International Newspaper Colour Quality Club within 5 months of start up.
– Al Yaum from Saudi Arabia has successfully obtained a number of ISO certifications that allow it to acquire external customers in addition to printing the Groups own newspapers. Saleh Al-Humaidan, Managing Director, shares the case study on how they did it.
– Daily Telegraph from UK is well known for its integrated newsroom. Now this innovative media company addresses another key issue on how to monetize the online audience and what are the correct metrics to sell print, online and mobile ads.
– ABP Group from Calcutta has diversified its business into broadcasting, events and new media. D.D. Purkayastha, CEO, describes how they create synergies out of the different platforms with a 360 degree approach.
– Jakarta Globe, the new English paper in Indonesia, now engages the young readers via social media with over 140,000 face book friends. Lin Neuman, Chief Editorial Advisor, will talk about the learning lessons and monetization prospects of these efforts.
In addition to the case studies, WAN-IFRA is bringing several experts from the industry to address key issues, including pay walls, print advertising innovations, newsprint prices, global trends, tablet publishing and more.
