Borouge showcases its innovative, value creating solutions at Chinaplas 2011

Wednesday 06. April 2011 - Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, will strengthen its leading position in the global market by showcasing its commitment to Value Creation through Innovation at Chinaplas, Asia's most significant plastics and rubber trade fair from May 17-20, 2011. Borouge is a joint venture between Borealis and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

Three key pillars will form Borouge’s presence at the exhibition, namely innovative plastics solutions, its investments and Water for the World. Visitors to the Borouge stand will experience how the unique Borstar technology provides differentiated solutions for the infrastructure, automotive and advanced packaging markets.
The plastics industry in China has continuously maintained high-speed growth for the past 30 years, and the Chinese market has become the single largest market for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) with 30 million tonnes consumed in 2010.
Innovative, value-creating plastics solutions
Borouge’s commitment to innovation provides customers with an access to a broad product portfolio and sustainable solutions, which deliver better performance and value. The polyolefins (PO) solution for large diameter pipes is a prime example of how Borouge is supporting its customers in the Middle East to develop efficient and robust pipes solutions for new industrial plants in the region. The excellent chemical resistance and mechanical properties of PE and PP pipes make them ideal for a wide range of applications including cooling water transportation, sea water intakes and outfalls, and effluent disposal.
Innovative solutions for the advanced packaging and infrastructure markets will demonstrate Borouge’s strong commitment to plastics industry in China. With the addition of new homopolymer grades in its Bormod range to its product portfolio, Borouge brings a significant performance advantage to Cast PP film (CPP) flexible packaging structures. The latest grade for multilayer coextrusion film structures raises film performance, enables up to 30% downgauging, and realizes cost savings throughout the packaging value chain.
Borouge’s focus on the automotive industry will definitely become the highlight of Borouge stand at Chinaplas. Together with Borealis, Borouge provides compounded polypropylene resins to the global automotive market. And with the introduction of innovative plastics solutions, significant reductions in overall vehicle weight can be achieved, adding to the environmental friendliness of automotives.
Investment for future growth
Borouge, which has its headquarters in the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, is expanding its petrochemical plant at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, by 2.5 million tonnes per year (t/y) to a total annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes by mid-2014. The project, entitled Borouge 3, includes two additional polyethylene units and two additional polypropylene units as well as a low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit, specifically for the global wire and cable market.
To support the fast growing market in China, Borouge established in 2010 logistics hubs in Shanghai and Guangzhou, to ensure optimum service levels to its Asian customers. A state-of-the-art compounding plant with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes and the potential for expansion to 80,000 t/y was inaugurated. Resins are compounded here specifically for customers in the growing automotive and appliance markets. A second plant is now planned for Guangzhou and is expected to be supplying 105,000 t/y of compounded resins by 2012.
Value Creation through Innovation is Borouge’s stated mission and Borouge is investing over US$ 70 million towards building a new Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi. By the end of 2011, the Innovation Centre will house more than 50 international researchers and engineers who will focus on innovations for compounding as well as innovative plastics solutions for the pipe, automotive and advanced packaging industries in close cooperation and partnership with Borouge’s customers throughout the value chain, ensuring that specific customer requirements are met. The Company also has an Application Centre at its manufacturing plant in Shanghai focussing on innovative solutions for the fast growing automotive and appliances markets.
Water for the World
Water for the World, an initiative of Borouge and Borealis launched in 2007, is part of the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and towards addressing the global water challenge. In 2009 Borouge contributed to providing clean drinking water to 10,000 victims of the earthquake in Sichuan, China; and in Vietnam, Borouge contributed to providing new drinking water systems for two local hospitals. In 2010, Borouge announced that it would help to replace the water distribution networks in four villages in Northern Pakistan that were destroyed by the recent floods, and in 2011 announced that two major research projects into groundwater reservoirs in the UAE will be supported through the “Water for the World” initiative.
A joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s major oil and gas companies, and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions, Borouge is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation.
