Fuji Xerox Completes Land-Use Survey for Biodiversity Conservation at its Production Sites in China

Tuesday 08. March 2011 - Aiming at conserving biodiversity, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. conducted land-use surveys at all of its production sites in China (Shanghai, Shenzhen and SuzhouNote 1) in January. This follows similar surveys conducted at five domestic manufacturing sites (Mie, Niigata, Toyama and KanagawaNote 2) in April and May 2010, in an initiative to identify the effects of its business activities on the ecosystem and biodiversity.

Amidst growing public interest in biodiversity and its conservation, Fuji Xerox reviewed the environmental impact of its business activities as a whole from the perspective of their impact on the ecosystem and biodiversity. According to relevancy to the businesses, the company determined the priority of activities for reducing such impact, and began the surveys in April 2010, with the aims of examining the effects of these sites’ land use on the ecosystem and biodiversity.
Similarly to the surveys conducted in Japan, to identify risks of ecosystem destruction, the latest round of on-site investigations, accompanied by an expert, examined; (1) how water intake/drainage and chemicals are controlled, (2) whether each site identifies latent biodiversity in its site and surrounding areas, and (3) how plantations at these sites are managed. Although Fuji Xerox did not find any risk on the surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity, the surveys confirmed factors that would allow the company to contribute to biodiversity conservation through its land use. For example, encouraging ground penetration of rainwater could contribute to water circulation in local areas. Improving the quality of plantations on site premises could help rejuvenate the ecosystem. Fuji Xerox also identified a social contribution approach of assisting ecosystem preservation in the neighborhood.
Based on the survey results and findings, Fuji Xerox will draw up a policy of promoting biodiversity conservation through its manufacturing sites’ land use, and enforce it in FY2011. The company implements advanced CSR activities at all stages of its value chain including procurement, manufacturing, product usage and recycling. It will continue to reinforce its initiatives for contributing to the conservation of the ecosystem and biodiversity not only in Japan but also in other parts of the world.
