The New York Times Launches NYTimes App for Chrome Web Store, Adding to its Significant Lineup of Web-Based Applications
Wednesday 08. December 2010 - The New York Times has launched the NYTimes App for Chrome Web Store, a new application built with HTML5 to deliver a premium reading experience of the latest news that can be easily customized based on readers' preferences. The design is based on the popular Times Skimmer application, which was launched in 2009.
The app is free and available through the Chrome Web Store. Readers will be asked to pay for access to the content of the app when The Times launches its pay model next year.
NYTimes App for Chrome Web Store provides readers with the layout and experience of paging through a newspaper, making it easy to skim through headlines, discover new articles and switch sections. Readers can choose from 10 customized display settings to view the latest news from The Times in a variety of layouts including:
headlines displayed in a list,
editorial-ranked feeds,
a gallery of photos,
content set against a black background
and several other options.
“The Times is committed to delivering our content wherever readers want it and in ways that best suit their needs,” said Yasmin Namini, senior vice president, marketing and circulation, and general manager, reader applications, The New York Times Media Group. “With the NYTimes App for Chrome Web Store, readers can tailor the display format based on their reading preferences, allowing them to easily skim the surface before diving in to the breadth and depth of The Times’s content.”
“As the Web continues to evolve, we are harnessing new tools – like HTML5 – to enhance how our readers interact with The Times and to develop a more engaging experience,” said Denise Warren, senior vice president and chief advertising officer, The New York Times Media Group and general manager, NYTimes.com. “This app is a unique opportunity for our advertisers to align their brand with The Times’s affluent and influential audience on an innovative new platform.”
Features of the app include:
Ability to tailor the news reading experience from a selection of 10 custom designs/skins;
Off-line reading capability;
Optional breaking news alters pushed to desktop;
Share tools, including Facebook, Twitter and e-mail;
And ability to select preferred font size.
The app is available for free from the Chrome Web Store, an online marketplace where users can search, browse and use Web-based applications and extensions. From productivity tools to research sites to interactive games, the Chrome Web Store helps users find the best applications on the Web.
