The New York Times Launches International Weekly Edition In Uruguay And Russia
Wednesday 23. September 2009 - The New York Times announced today the launch of its international news supplement in two additional publications: El Observador in Uruguay , and Novaya Gazeta in Russia . The section, which will be published in Spanish and Russian respectively, joins a global network of newspapers that carry the international weekly, first introduced in 2002.
The international weekly retains the layout and typography of The New York Times and includes news coverage, features, commentary, color photos and graphics about the United States , world affairs, business, culture and social trends. It is prepared in New York by a team of editors and designers from The New York Times News Service .
“We welcome El Observador and Novaya Gazeta to the international weekly community,” said Gloria Brown Anderson, vice president of international editorial development, The New York Times News Services. “These two papers share our commitment to provide high-quality journalism to readers and we are honored to be distributed in these countries.”

Founded in 1991, El Observador is distributed daily throughout Uruguay . The publication includes sections on national and international news, opinion, economy, culture and sports, and carries supplements that cover business, university news and agriculture. In addition to the newspaper, El Observador publishes various magazines and annual yearbooks.
In a joint statement released by Novaya Gazeta, shareholders Mikhail Gorbachev and Aleksandr Lebedev, and editor in chief Dmitri Muratov said, ” Staff and shareholders of Novaya Gazeta are proud to announce the publication of a Russian edition of The New York Times supplement. Novaya Gazeta is published three times a week in Russia and throughout Europe . The publication includes sections on news, politics, economy, culture, sports and community. Novaya Gazeta has won numerous honors including the Amnesty International Prize (UK), Les Palmes Académique ( France ) and the Gerd Bucerius award ( Germany ).
