BASF at the European Coatings Show in Nuremberg

Wednesday 11. March 2009 - Between March 31 and April 2 BASF will be presenting new products and customer-orientated solutions at the European Coatings Show 2009 in Nuremberg, Germany, the leading trade fair for the international coatings and inks industry.

At BASF’s booth, number 511 in hall 7A, BASF experts will inform trade visitors from the coatings, paints, adhesives, printing, packaging and construction chemicals industries about the comprehensive range on offer and provide advice on service matters.

Performance Chemicals

“Effect sells”: opportunities for attractive styling with effect pigments from BASF
BASF will be presenting one of the most innovative portfolios of effect pigments for distinctive optical effects. No matter whether it is depth, gloss, sparkle or multicolor effects that are required, effect pigments from BASF offer designers a variety of attractive styling opportunities. The latest example: with Glacier Frost White BASF will be presenting the whitest effect pigment currently available on the market. A new generation of titanium dioxide-coated synthetic mica flakes makes it possible to achieve extraordinary luster and brilliance, combined with the “whitest of whites” for attractive applications in coatings, plastics and printing inks.

We complete the world of orange: The new inorganic pigment Sicopal Orange L 2430
Sicopal Orange L 2430 is a new, brilliant orange with high color strength that extends the color space for inorganic pigments with its coloristic properties. It has a high hiding power, is resistant to chemicals and weathering, and is stable to heat. Uses range from alkaline silicate/silicone plaster finishes and color matching systems to powder coatings and coil coatings. Based on its new chemical structure it has been listed in the internationally recognized Colour Index (C.I.) as Pigment Orange 82.

“Paint it cool”: energy efficiency with functional black pigments from BASF
Red-hot roofs, façades or ship containers are things of the past. Dark surfaces coated with black pigments from BASF remain significantly cooler on hot days. By contrast with carbon-black pigments, Paliogen Black, Sicopal Black and Lumogen Black absorb considerably less near-infrared radiation, which accounts for more than 50 % of the energy radiated from the sun. As a result, the amount of heat absorbed is reduced appreciably and dark components remain up to 20 °C cooler. Trade fair visitors will be able to experience this effect live at the BASF booth.

T-ShadeTM: customized colors with customized properties
T-ShadeTM pigments are customized, very well homogenized multipigment blends. They combine the advantages of organic and inorganic pigments and thereby meet the specific property profiles of powder coatings, coil coatings, water-borne and solvent-borne coatings. The spectrum of applications ranges from corporate colors, RAL and NCS through to intensive monopigment blends.

Acrylics & Dispersions

BASF’s new generation of binders for Architectural Coatings and Construction Chemicals

Acronal polymer dispersions – environmentally advanced and ahead of their time
From now on, consumers don’t need to compromise on requirements for eco friendliness and functionality when it comes to exterior and interior paints. With Acronal DS 6258, Acronal DS 6270 and Acronal DS 6282 X for example, BASF offers environmentally advanced paints that not only fulfil but exceed all standard demands: they are low VOC, low odor polymer dispersions that are free of solvents, ammonia, formaldehyde and APEO. No coalescent is needed in paints formulated with these binders. Acronal DS 6258, which is suited best for exterior applications, is a UV crosslinked styrene acrylic polymer with low minimum film formation temperature yet very good dirt pick-up resistance. The pure acrylic polymer dispersion Acronal DS 6270 provides for excellent weathering resistance. The product is especially recommended for use in masonry paints and textured finishes for exterior application but is also commonly used in high quality interior paints. Wall paints based on the new binder Acronal DS 6282 X are the ultimate solution for environmentally friendly, easy to clean premium interior paints: This is possible due to the specific characteristics of the polymer.

AQAGloss – high gloss without compromise
AQAGloss , winner of the 2007 European Coatings Award, is a binder used to manufacture high-gloss water-based coatings which represents a genuine alternative to solvent-based architectural coatings. Paints based on AQAGloss already meet the environmental standards of the future (EU Directive 2004/42/EC) since they contain only small amounts of film-forming auxiliaries. In addition, these paints contain no heavy metals (driers) or formaldehyde. The advantage it offers users are haze-free, high-gloss surfaces previously associated only with solvent-based alkyd resin coatings . Whereas the distribution and flow properties of conventional acrylate coatings can barely match the performance of solvent-based systems, AQAGloss allows paint formulations whose rheological behavior meets the requirements of professionals too. AQAGloss , originally developed for high-gloss paints, can now also be used for wood coatings showing excellent long term weathering results.

COL.9 for clean and beautiful facades
Thanks to its extremely fine nanostructure, the new COL.9 binder makes facades particularly resistant to weathering and dirt. The principle: inorganic nanoparticles in the COL.9 binder are incorporated into organic polymer particles of a water-based dispersion. After application and drying, the inorganic nanoparticles form a homogeneous three-dimensional network that not only protects against dirt but also offers exceptional color retention and ensures crack resistance.

E nvironmentally advanced polymer dispersions for wood coatings
Within many years BASF has become a leading supplier of polymer dispersions for the exterior wood coating industry, offering a comprehensive portfolio of dispersions and primers as well as an extensive know-how in formulation, application and testing. The well-known Acronal LR 9014 for example, a multiphase straight acrylic binder with a tailor-made morphology and a special wet adhesion promoter, has become a market standard for high quality exterior wood coatings. Thanks to its excellent blocking resistance and outdoor durability Acronal LR 9014 is recommended for all kinds of decorative and joinery exterior wood coatings, both for in transparent and opaque formulations.

Polymers for the Construction Chemicals Industry – universally applicable and environmentally advanced
BASF’s polymer dispersions, polymer powders and polymer solutions on the basis of acrylates, styrene and butadiene are also used for the production of construction chemicals, such as filling compounds, roof coatings, sealants or flooring adhesives. As water-based systems, they are free of sol vents and thus particularly environmentally sound. Specific Acronal dispersions , for example, are due to their performance characteristics and ecological properties especially suitable for formulating low-emission, EC1-conforming parquet adhesives. These aqueous, acrylate-based polymer dispersions are APEO-free, low-VOC, odor-neutral and display an outstanding stability and good processability. In cementitious waterproofing membranes the innovative Acronal dispersion and redispersible powders ensure that they are flexible, everlasting crack bridging, water-resistant and not becoming brittle. Due to their high environmental soundness Acronal dispersions are highly recommended for the formulation of products which have direct contact with drinking water or are designed for outside application in drinking water reserve areas.

Specialty Monomers – key building blocks for the desired coating properties
BASF will also be exhibiting its specialty monomers business line at the ECS. These are special acrylic monomers used to manufacture polymers for automotive and industrial coatings, decorative paints or adhesives. The chemical structure of the individual monomers enables users to give specific properties to their final products. For example cyclohexyl methacrylate (CHMA) considerably improves the weather resistance of paints. Of particular interest for developers: in joint projects with customers, BASF makes it possible to manufacture monomers suited to solving specific problems even on an exclusive basis, if desired.

NEP: BASF proactively develops an alternative for NMP
BASF proactively has developed an interesting alternative to the solvent N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP): N-ethylpyrrolidone (NEP). The EU is expected to classify NMP as “toxic” effective June 1, 2009. This means that the use of NMP will be limited in certain applications. Since there is hardly a difference in the physical and chemical properties of NMP and NEP, NEP can replace NMP in many applications at little additional cost. This is one of the reasons why the demand for NEP is growing. Customers appreciate the quality of BASF’s NEP product combined with the company’s technical service, which is based on many years of extensive expertise.
