Toppan Printing is selected as one of the “100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World” for the third year running

Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. (hereafter Toppan Printing; Head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President & CEO: Naoki Adachi) has been recognized as one of the “Global 100: Most Sustainable Corporations in the World 2009” (Global 100), marking its selection for the third consecutive year.
Since 2005, Canadas Corporate Knights Inc. has evaluated the sustainability of over 1800 of the worlds companies from various business fields based on research data provided by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors of the US, and subsequently announced the top 100.
As in 2008, the list of 100 companies selected for 2009 was announced on January 28 to coincide with the World Economic Forums annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland. The companies selected were subject to detailed comparative analysis of performance related to the environment, society and governance, and recognized as the best in the world.
In being selected for a third consecutive year from 2007, Toppan Printing was recognized for its environmental management systems, environmentally friendly products, and promotion of CSR procurement. It is the only company from the Japanese printing industry to make the list.
Based on its Corporate Philosophy of “contributing to a fulfilling lifestyle as a mainstay of information and culture”, to fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility, Toppan Printing proactively pursues activities in line with the concept of “triple bottom lines” for the balanced development of society, the environment and the economy.
With regard to the environmental initiatives for which Toppan Printing received recognition, the company established an Ecology Center in 1991 and engages in proactive activities on a group-wide basis. In order to reduce the environmental burden in all operational processes, the company undertakes activities to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and recycle resources. Toppan Printing is also pushing forward the development of environmentally friendly products and provides various items that contribute to environmental conservation including the “Cartocan”, a paper based beverage container.
In terms of contributions to society and culture, since 2000 Toppan Printing has operated the Printing Museum, Tokyo, which presents the history and culture of printing, and Toppan Hall, a concert hall for classical music. The company is also involved in activities to contribute to local communities, such as receiving local elementary schools for integrated study and holding “Lunchtime Concerts” that are free of charge.
Toppan Printing will continue to pursue further sustainability and aim to be “a strong company that is respected and trusted by society” both in Japan and overseas.
