Stora Enso Ventures partly owned Design Force launches solution for off-the-shelf sustainability

Friday 28. November 2008 - Stora Enso Ventures’ partly owned company Design Force AB of Sweden has developed and manufactures a board laminate material called Re-board, which is made from recycled paper and can itself be recycled. The material is very light, strong and printable.

Notabene, one of the top book and gift chain stores in Norway, will replace the metal shelves in its shops with Re-board board-based shelves to lower its climate change impact. Underpinning its commitment to a low-carbon future, Notabene will replace the fixtures and fittings in all its 130 stores with 100% organic recyclable materials.

“As products made from wood and paper store carbon and can be recycled, their carbon footprint is less than that of many competing products. Notabene deserves all credit for thinking differently and taking this initiative to lessen climate change. As most retailers refit stores at least once a year, there are tremendous environmental savings to be made from refitting stores using Re-board,” says Kieron Loy, Marketing and Sales Manager at Stora Enso.

Re-board is organic, made from recycled paper and manufactured using low-carbon technology. It is extremely light and shipped flat-packed on Re-board pallets, thus reducing transportation-related CO2 emissions. Re-board is easily assembled without power tools, and at the end of its life Re-board can be recycled. Compared with traditional metal or particle board shelving, Re-board makes a lot of sense to retailers serious about sustainability.

Notabene will fully test Re-board in a Norwegian store over the coming months.

“I have every confidence that Re-board will exceed Notabene’s expectations. Top retailers from all over Europe, Japan and the USA have already either placed orders or enquired about Re-board. It is time to consider production facilities internationally, and being member of the Stora Enso Group will facilitate international expansion,” says Kurt Alden, developer and MD of Design Force.

Design Force AB is owned by Stora Enso Ventures, management and private investors. Stora Enso Ventures is a corporate venture capital unit and part of Stora Enso Group.
