Gannett names Michael G. Kane Interstate Group President, President and Publisher at Indianapolis

Friday 18. July 2008 - Michael G. Kane, formerly vice president of Gannett’s East Publishing Group and president and publisher at the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle, today was named Interstate Group president and president and publisher of The Indianapolis Star.

“Michael is an excellent leader with broad experience in running complex operations. He is attuned to people’s needs as well as the business of journalism, which makes him an excellent person to run the Interstate Group,” said Bob Dickey, president of Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing.

He replaces Barbara Henry, who will retire Aug. 1.

Kane began his career as a freelance sports stringer. In 1982, he became the assistant executive director of the International Newspaper Marketing Association and in 1988 was named manager of marketing and promotion for The Sun in Baltimore, MD.

Kane joined Gannett in 1992 as manager of marketing services at The News Journal in Wilmington, DE, and became director of market development at the Poughkeepsie (NY) Journal in 1993. He held various management positions at The Journal News in Westchester County, NY, before becoming president and publisher of the Lansing (MI) State Journal and regional vice president for Gannett’s Midwest Newspaper Group.

In 2005, he was named president and publisher of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and regional vice president for Gannett’s East Newspaper Group.

Kane received a B.A. in Communications/Journalism from Virginia Tech in 1981.
