Royal praise for ABB newspaper printing technology

Prince Charles takes control on ABB’s MPS Control Console

Monday 23. June 2008 - ABB’s Center of Excellence Printing recently added a prominent personality to its list of users. The occasion was the opening of NWN Media Ltd’s brand new print center at Deeside in North Wales, and the prominent personality was none other than Prince Charles.

The newly opened print center houses two newspaper printing presses supplied by KBA of Würzburg in Germany and controlled by systems from ABB’s CoE Printing. As well as the control systems, the ABB delivery included 3 control consoles, ABB’s press management system, MPS Production, and its production analysis system MPS Inform.

In his opening speech Prince Charles paid tribute to the work done by the family-owned newspaper publishing company NWN Media Ltd. and praised their investment in modern technology for producing their newspapers. “I’m impressed to see the latest technology you can find,” he said.

After brief instruction by NWN Media’s production manager Mark Wall, Prince Charles took command of ABB’s MPS Control Console and started the press. The tight integration of ABB’s MPS Production press management system with NWN Media’s prepress systems meant that the newspapers produced by Prince Charles could include photos taken of him only minutes earlier on his arrival at the site.

Wolfgang Felber, head of ABB’s Centre of Excellence Printing is delighted with the success of this project. “Not only is it our first major reference in Great Britain, but it also shows that the modular structure of our systems means that they can be configured to meet the needs of smaller family-owned companies and not only the multinational publishing giants.” He refused to comment when asked if Prince Charles was to be invited to the next meeting of CoE Printing’s MPS User Club.
