HP Offers Sun Solaris Customers a Simple, Speedy Transition to HP Servers

Friday 22. February 2008 - HP is adding more tools to help customers drive business growth and lower total cost of ownership by migrating Solaris applications on Sun SPARC-based servers to industry-standard HP ProLiant and Integrity servers.

As part of this effort, HP and Transitive Corporation have entered into a distribution agreement under which HP and its channel partners will be certified resellers of Transitive’s QuickTransit virtualization software. The software allows users to quickly and easily migrate enterprise applications unchanged from SPARC-based servers to HP servers.

“Sun users who are running outdated, proprietary SPARC-based servers or have concerns about undefined future upgrade paths are no longer tied to Sun hardware if they want to run Solaris applications,” said Scott Farrand, vice president, Industry Standard Server Software, HP. “By extending our relationship with Transitive, HP continues to help customers prepare for future growth and improve application availability by migrating to higher performing servers that offer unmatched price/performance benefits and long-term investment protection.”

Transitive is currently offering QuickTransit for Solaris/SPARC-to-Linux/Itanium on HP Integrity servers. This allows users to migrate enterprise applications from SPARC-based hardware to the latest generation of HP Integrity servers running either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Novell SUSE Linux.

By moving business-critical applications to Integrity servers, customers can improve operational efficiency with increased application performance and greater uptime versus current or older SPARC-based hardware.

Strengthening its relationship with Transitive, HP named the company an HP Integrity Ready Partner and accepted Transitive into the HP BladeSystem Solution Builder Program and HP ProLiant Advantage Partner Program.

Expanded tools help server migrations

Since 2004, HP has generated an estimated $1.5 billion in revenue from moving Sun customers to HP Integrity and HP ProLiant servers. HP has partnered with Transitive to offer server solutions with QuickTransit for Solaris/SPARC-to-Linux/x86-64 solution since February 2007. HP and Transitive have helped many customers improve business application performance and lower costs by migrating Solaris applications to more powerful and affordable HP ProLiant platforms running Linux.

With Solaris applications running on HP ProLiant and HP Integrity servers, more businesses can experience the benefits of a standards-based infrastructure without compromising application continuity.

“Transitive has seen increasing interest among enterprise data center managers in deploying its QuickTransit product line on the latest HP server platforms to run legacy Solaris/SPARC applications without incurring the expense or delays of porting the software,” said Bob Wiederhold, chief executive officer and president, Transitive. “The appointment of HP as a global reseller of the entire QuickTransit product line is an important milestone for Transitive, as it increases the availability of this innovative technology and allows customers to more quickly and easily purchase a combined hardware and software solution.”

Reseller agreement and new partner status

As a certified reseller of Transitive products, HP will offer customers Transitive’s x86 products through HP Software Licensing & Management Solutions. The program includes flexible ordering, reporting and multi-currency billing and provides customers with simple source and software license management solutions.

Transitive is a member of the HP Developer & Solution Partner Program, a worldwide program designed to support independent software vendors, systems integrators and consultants with the tools and information to help them grow their business with HP. With customers increasingly turning to HP for server consolidation projects, HP also accepted Transitive into the ProLiant Advantage Partner Program, a worldwide program for software companies interested in optimizing their products on HP ProLiant servers.

With Transitive as an HP Integrity Ready Partner, customers looking to migrate from outdated platforms and refresh their business-critical server hardware will have Transitive solutions tailored for HP Integrity servers. In addition, Transitive has joined the HP BladeSystem Solution Builder Program, a program that connects partners with HP resources to design, deliver and deploy components and solution stacks on blades.
