Plastic packaging for olives & pickles

Monday 21. January 2008 - Spanish table olive producer and speciality foods Grupo Angel Camacho S.L. has turned to RPC Containers Corby to develop an innovative plastic foodservice jar to replace its current glass packaging by offering improved performance and safety.

The family owned company Grupo Angel Camacho S.L. is the world’s leading table olive processor with a total annual production of approx. 40,000,000 Kgs. The group, with corporate offices located in Moron near Seville, initiated its activities in 1897 and nowadays operates various companies and factories in Spain as well as in the USA, the United Kingdom and Poland. Apart from olives, the group packs and markets a series of other food items that includes pickles, olive oils, preserves, condiments and herbal teas.

For its numerous foodservice accounts, that are now demanding safe, convenient and yet low-cost packaging for olives and pickles, the company needed to move out of its traditional glass packaging, but required an effective alternative for long-term ambient storage.

The “Thermic Ultra” foodservice jar from RPC Corby offers a number of significant advantages. Substantially lighter than the glass alternative, it is easier to handle for end users and provides the potential for reduced transport costs, a particularly important benefit for products that are exported. Adoption of the “Thermic Ultra” also removes the need for HACCP glass breakage procedures both on the filling line and in busy catering establishments.

Grupo Angel Camacho will experience other benefits from packing its olives and pickles in the “Thermic Ultra” as it is capable of withstanding the high temperatures of pasteurising and sterilising. Its multi-layer PP/EVOH/PP construction – long-recognised for its excellent barrier properties for extended ambient shelf life – uses unique “Thermic” ribbing that is flexible enough to allow expansion during the heating process and then contraction during cooling. The design thus gives the product the freedom to move during cooking but has the necessary strength to avoid subsequent panelling.

The new packaging consists of the 2.4 litre “Thermic Ultra” from RPC Corby with a wrap around label, and a cap supplied by Panocap Europe.

“We are extremely pleased with the new plastic packaging provided by RPC Corby. We were keen to phase out the traditional glass packaging for our foodservice accounts, and move to a safer, lighter and more convenient material, and RPC Corby have given us the solution,” comments Jorge Gomez Carretero, R&D Manager at Grupo Angel Camacho S.L.
